Text Box:          PETPALOOZA and EARTH DAY — Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge representatives showed up bright and early for the 2nd Annual   PETPALOOZA held last April 30, 2006, at Princess Anne Middle School. And on EARTH DAY.
Although the weather did not cooperate with us on both           occasions, we managed to have fun and passed out a lot of our         brochures with tons of           information such as the      refuge’s mission, how we started and what we are doing now to help rehab our wildlife friends . It also talks about the do’s and don’t on how to handle them and what to do if  they seem to be injured. We

Text Box: are always looking for          volunteers to help in anyway you can: Contact Beth at    421-3766 or Carol at         495-2932 if you think you could give some of your time!
During the PETPALOOZA, there were all sorts of planned   activities being held     throughout the day.  Most of them were centered on our pets  versus our wildlife    creatures. But most wonderful but heart aching thing that happen is when someone brought in two baby possums. We started  assessing them and people started coming over to see what we were fussing about. Unfortunately, we     informed them that we were

Text Box: immediately going to take the back to the refuge because it was not good for them to be handled too much by too many people.
We have an upcoming event slated for July 10th—14th., called the K-9 Kid’s Camp which will be held at 1847     Centerville Turnpike, South  Chesapeake, VA 23322. If you need more info on this event, please contact us either by email  at:
evelyn@evelynswildliferefuge.org or by calling 430-2886

They have a great power point presentation that addresses our beliefs concerning our wildlife. Both ladies are available to talk to anyone interested.
We would also like to say      congratulations to Doug Carsten for being picked for “Captain Select” for the US Navy. Way to go, Doug!!!

Carla is busy putting our name out the public. She also has all sorts of goodies with our name and logo such as magnets, and candy.
Hopefully we can pass some of these out at upcoming local events. We need volunteers to help man the info booth at these events. If interested, Please contact Carla at 717-2228 or    at 464-0313.

Text Box: Trivia for the Month
True or False….
We would normally see foxes, raccoons or possums   come out during the daytime to play.
False. When they come out  during daytime it’s normally       because they are either nursing or  looking for food.
It’s okay to food and water near a nesting duck.
False. This will attract other wildlife such as raccoons and possums to come while the mother is away and thus feed on the ducks eggs.
Text Box:          If you are interested in learning to become a                rehabilitator, please contact us and we will be glad to explain the simple process. You will work directly with an experienced rehabilitator to learn how to care for these wonderful      creatures.  If you would prefer to just help out, but not rehab from your own home, you can become a Category 4. this       involves working out of a Category 2's residence.
We are also in need of people with  marketing, fund raising, and grant writing experience. These are VERY important jobs and definitely needed!! Please if you know of someone with these talents, of if you possess them yourself; consider     helping us and the wild animals!

Miscellaneous
We are expecting an Eagle Scout soon to earn his badge. He has decided to help around the refuge. He said the first order of business for him is to replace the roof in some of the cages. So by the time it’s   finished, I’m sure it will look great!
Also, I am mentoring a high school student from Ocean Lakes High School. He has committed to work 100 hours. He doesn’t seem to mind. Part of his      project is cleaning “poopy cages”!!!
Text Box: Giving Thanks
We would like to thank the following for helping our cause.
· To Kim and Vance of Color Graphics for helping with our newsletter. They have done a super job.
· Susan Martin donated a lot of cleaning stuff that are environmentally safe but effective enough to kill known viruses’ including Parvo. The cleaning agent comes with a money back guarantee. You can contact Susan if you want to try some of these products at 467-3952 or at “susan@fantasiesandfeast.com.
· Wayne Van Wick for completing a cage (so that I maybe able to take in more critters)
· To everyone who gave their MVP card number to Jim.
· Last but not the least Linda Velarde for doing such a great job on our newsletter.

Text Box:
I am an Animal Rescuer
My job is to assist God’s creatures
I was born with the need to fulfill their needs
I take in new family members without plan, thought or selection
I have bought dog food with my last dime
I have patted a mangy head with my bare hands
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid
I have fallen in love a thousand times
And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body
I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends
I don’t often use the word “PET”
I notice those lost at the roadside
And my heart aches
I will hand raise a field mouse
Text Box: …..Guess what kind of wildlife do these footprints belong to

Text Box: Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge
Text Box:          The other story is not so nice. Two little raccoon babies came for rehab  about three weeks ago. They were taken to a police precinct en route to the refuge. Unfortunately quite a few people handled them. One person got scratched. So they had to be taken , killed and tested for rabies. So let your friends and neighbors know not to handle wildlife, to get it to a rehabber.
Finally, because of my Irish background, I will be  going home in September to coordinate with a local school where my cousins attend. They are interested to view a presentation of our refuge.
Locally, Tallwood High School is also interested in hooking up with Ireland. They are to explore the      educational aspects of wildlife on different continents. I’ll keep you all updated on the Irish/American hookup.
Thanks to all of you for your support. Without your membership we would not have been able to rehab so many animals this year.

Text Box:          Hello and Happy 4th of July to you all! Well a lot has been happening since our last newsletter, so let me bring you up to date.
As you can see by our animal count, we are staying busy with babies of different species coming in to the Refuge. We have raccoon, foxes (grays), rabbits,   possums, squirrels, ducklings and goslings The morning time is filled with all sorts of noises from these little creatures, letting me know they are hungry and need immediate attention. It seems we just got through feeding everyone and clean cages, then we have to do it all over again.
I do have two anecdotes to pass along. One     concerning a female raccoon. She denned in a homeowners attic to have her babies. She was trapped and brought to me with her offspring. I was able to put her in my outside cage to finish caring for her babies. The homeowner happened to Joe Flanagan of 13 News. I got a fair deal from it. Joe agreed to do an interview with me for the news show if I let mom and babies stay on the Refuge!!
Text Box: A Note From Evelyn
Text Box: Due to constant destruction of native habitat, it is  important to  preserve as much wildlife as possible by providing medical care and assistance to all wildlife in Virginia. To rehabilitate and release back to the wild all species of wildlife. To provide assistance to other rehabilitators in their efforts.  Using education to enrich lives about the wildlife that exists now and, with help,  forever…
