EVELYN'S WILDLIFE REFUGE

WILDLIFE NEWSLETTER       NOVEMBER 2005

Due to constant destruction of native habitat, it is important to preserve as much wildlife as possible by providing medical care and assistance to all wildlife in Virginia. To rehabilitate and release back to the wild all species of wildlife. To provide assistance to other rehabilitators in their efforts. Using education to enrich lives about the wildlife that exists now and, with help, forever..

*************************************************************************************************

Hello and welcome to our first newsletter. Who knew when I started out as a wildlife rehabilitator 15 years ago I would end up with a wildlife refuge, www.evelynswildliferefuge.org . Each year we are seeing more habitats destroyed and more animals and birds displaced. It seemed the right thing to do in establishing this refuge.

I have not done this alone. So thanks go to my husband Jim who has been invaluable with his support. He has built cages, filled out all of the paperwork for our tax exempt refuge, runs to the vet, SPCA or wherever he is needed, and oh yes, doesn't complain when supper is not cooked during rehab season.

To all dedicated rehabbers who never tell me no and can always find room to take one more critter- Thank You!!

Last, but not least, I can't forget the kindness of the general public. These are people who have brought me an animal or bird in need of help and have stayed as friends and supporters in our efforts.

In future editions these individuals will be recognized.

I hope you will enjoy reading our newsletter. If there is something you would like to see in future editions, please, let us know.

You might enjoy some of the anecdotes of the animals and birds brought into the rehab system
Let me introduce you to Charlie!!

 A CROW IS A CROW!

Charlie the crow came into the system in May 2005. The gentleman who brought home to me, found him sitting in his driveway. It appeared he had a broken leg and sure enough my Vet (Dr. Bostic) confirmed the diagnosis. So with a nice pink bandage on his leg, I proceeded to rehab Charlie into a fledgling.

The break healed and Charlie became the hit or scourge in my backyard depending on what animals were there. Even the raccoons were wary of him, especially when he was scolding everyone. At first he wasn't interested in the other crows in the area. (Jim and I were his main squeeze!!).

Everywhere we went outside, he would follow and in the heat of the day he couldn't get into our air-conditioned home quick enough. It was not unusual to see him sitting on top of our kitchen cabinets. Well, eventually Charlie made friends with the other crows and one day, finally realized he was a crow. Months later we see him off in the distance, and if we don't see him we sure can hear him.

SQUIRRELS ARE FALLING FROM THE SKY!!

Events happen to all rehabilitators. One such case concerned Carol Carsten. She related this story to me. I thought you may enjoy it.

Carol came out to her front yard recently to feed the squirrels running around outside. As she sat on the grass watching them, a hawk suddenly appeared and dropped a squirrel right at her feet. Carol bent over to pick up the squirrel thinking it was dead. Luckily, it wasn't. It had a gash on its neck from the hawks talon and was suffering head trauma from the fall. Carol immediately swung into action and brought the squirrel into her rehab room. Put her on heat and kept her quiet. Eventually she took it to another rehabilitator (Carol works and the squirrel needed further care). For a few days the squirrel was running around in circles, which is a sign of head trauma but like all good stories the squirrel got better and was put into a cage where there were baby squirrels that needed (you guessed it) a momma!!

So the hawk missed his lunch and the squirrel lives to tell another day.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

If you are interested in learning to become a rehabilitator, please contact us and we will be glad to explain the simple process. You will work directly with an experienced rehabilitator to learn how to care for these wonderful creatures. If you would prefer to just help out, but not rehab from your own home, you can become a Category 4. This involves working out of a Category 2's residence.

We are also in need of people with marketing, fund raising, and grant writing experience. These are VERY important jobs and definitely needed!! Please if you know of someone with these talents, of if you possess them yourself; consider helping us and the wild animals!
